A very popular trilogy hit the bookstores and then the big screen a few years ago – ‘Twilight’, starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattison throwing them into the Hollywood stratosphere of superstardom. Many people don’t know this but it is the love story between Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) that sparked the imagination of E.L James to eventually write the trilogy of ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’.

‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ took the world by storm. In the modern world today, it wasn’t as controversial as Lady Chatterley’s Lover, first published in 1928 and written by D. H. Lawrence or Lolita, published in 1955 and written by Vladimir Nabokov. It did however, capture the imagination of many women wanting more out of their sexual lives.

The books are very well written and are real page turners and the leading man of the book, Christian Grey (played by Jamie Dornan in the movie) is many women’s fantasy – good looking, exceptionally wealthy, sexually confident and dominant and most of all, broken. It’s the broken part that kept women glued to the pages of this book as so many women dream of ‘saving’ and healing their broken men. The story transpires of how Christian’s exceptionally damaged childhood led him down the path to eventual domination of women to the extreme and it was only Anastasia Steele (played by Dakota Johnson), the protagonist of the story who was able to set him free. Meanwhile, there are very steamy scenes which made the book what it is – light erotica and very entertaining.

It was during the time that these books and movies were released that BDSM toys became more popular and people, who would normally shy away from such things, decided to experiment. No longer was BDSM a term for sex crazed ‘strange’ people who frequented ‘interesting’ night clubs but it became common place for your neighbor to your colleague and boss to secretly harbor their sexual BDSM secrets and explore behind closed doors. Yes, today, BDSM is much more popular than it used to be, but people do not easily admit to practicing it.

However, with technology today, it is very easy to purchase any toys you desire online. Anything these days are available from floggers to restraints and much more. People love playing with pleasure and pain.

Though, it’s not so easy to just find people that are interested in this type of play – because that is what it essentially is – a form of play, control, power and submission. Online dating is often a way to narrow down the list of people you want to meet for certain types of interesting play. BeNaughty is an online dating site which focuses more on flirty fun and hookups. MenNation is a gay dating website for gay and bisexual men looking to have fun and casual hook-ups.

No matter what your fantasy, no matter how taboo, anything and everything exists today. Just remember to always play it safe and never experiment with BDSM with people you hardly know as this kind of play is largely based on trust. The movie ‘Fifty Shades Freed’ (the third of the ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ trilogy) will be released in the United States on the 9th of February, appropriately, a few days before Valentine’s Day. Will this then be the end of the BDSM craze that started with the popularity of the first book back in 2011? We will have to wait and see.
